Shanghai Walking Tour – Discover the Old Western Countryside

Whether this is your first time in Shanghai or you've been here before, the urge to explore is real. Some travelers plan every detail before they arrive. Others wake up and follow their gut. And if you're the kind who wants to go beyond the usual tourist spots, then come walk with me—through what was once the countryside of Shanghai.

By countryside, I mean the real deal. The farmlands. The waterways. The quiet green lungs of old Shanghai. In our short preview video, we visited:

  • J. G. Ballard's childhood home – a glimpse into the early life of the Empire of the Sun author
  • Columbia Circle (Foreign Lane / 外国弄堂 Wài Guó Lòng Táng) – a hidden world of villas designed by legendary architect László Hudec
  • Columbia Country Club (now 上生新所 Shàng Shēng Xīn Suǒ) – where the old clubhouse and swimming pool once served expat families and their lively community

And of course, no proper walking tour is complete without a few local bites along the way. In the video, I gave you a taste of both sweet and savory steamed buns (包子 Bāo Zi) and that irresistibly saucy Tujia pancake (土家酱香饼 Tǔ Jiā Jiàng Xiāng Bǐng).

On the actual tour? On top of more places, history, and stories, you'll get to enjoy 5+ locally selected bites and sips — handpicked by yours truly, Braddah Li. I truly believe that when you add a little local flavor, the history and stories stick with you so much longer.

So, are you ready to walk, eat, and discover Shanghai's hidden countryside with me?
