Shanghai Walks
- Yongjia Road -
Lazy Saturday Afternoon Stroll
in Former French Concession
Like many tucked-away streets in Shanghai, Yongjia Road (永嘉路, formerly Route Herve De Sieyes) is absolutely bursting with charm.
And these days? Shanghai is surprisingly cool and dry — a welcome surprise, considering how scorching it usually still is this time of year. But hey, no one's complaining about nice, cool weather! The leaves haven't started falling yet, but the sun is setting earlier and earlier. By around 18:00, things get dark fast — so I'd suggest starting your walk a bit earlier in the afternoon, or heading out in the morning, to catch that beautiful light.
Start from the cross road No. 2 Ruijin Road or from Exit 1B at Hengshan Road Station — either way, you'll have an equal chance to uncover the hidden treasures along the route. Keep an eye out for that building draped in lush, thriving vines, or the pocket garden where adorable doggies meet and greet. Consider it a little challenge to find them!
If you start from No. 2 Ruijin Road, grab some Qiangbing (羌饼) at Hushiguang — that's 120 No. 2 Ruijin Road (沪食光老羌饼, 瑞金二路 120 号). It's what I call the Chinese "Focaccia." 😋
And when you're thirsty, take a sip of one of those creative caffeinated potions at Metal Hands — 37 Yongjia Road (铁手咖啡制造局, 永嘉路 37 号), right across from Shanghai Cultural Square (上海文化广场).
Feeling a bit hungry? Order some Spicy Pork Noodles (辣肉浇头面) at Qiaojiazha — 336 South Xiangyang Road (乔家栅食府, 襄阳南路 336 号). And after that, why not wash down those noods with a crafty brew at 8PINTS — 310 Yongjia Road (八品脱, 永嘉路 310 号弄口)?
But if you're craving some really affordable Western food, I highly recommend H2 — 595 Yongjia Road (永嘉路595号). Nothing fancy there — just some good old simple staples. Bon appétit! 🍽️
